Another my three-year old piece which is even more relevant now.
My regular subscribers had already learned that I definitely don't like tyranny and censorship, and that's why I hate Woke Left cancel culture so much. However, now I realized one more reason why I dislike this culture on such a profound level - it actually reinforces the victim mentality in communities whose rights it claims to protect (e.g., Black, gay or women rights), hence making them feel worse about themselves, and angrier at their alleged ‘oppressors', which in turn contributes to the increase in division instead of unity.
As far as I know, old feminist movements like classic second wave feminists, were EMPOWERING women, while modern, 3rd and 4th wave feminists, VICTIMIZE them; same with old MLK led racial justice movement and modern BLM shitshow. But victim mentality is very unhealthy and toxic psychologically, and, hence, the ideology which actively reinforces it is even more toxic.
What do I mean exactly. Again, Martin Luther King and other old Civil Rights movement activists acknowledged the problems Black community faces in US, but they were not constantly telling the Blacks how 'oppressed' they are and how bad and pissed they should feel. Instead, they were telling them that they have EQUAL rights with whites, that they can do whatever white people can, and if anyone disagrees, then fuck them. They are FREE AMERICANS, after all!
As a result, this rhetoric empowered the Black community, made it feel stronger, but also more integrated and united with the white community. Come on, it gave America its first Black president (he was very flawed though but it's another story already)! By the way, radical Woke activists try not to mention it much in their Black victimizing narrative.
What exactly modern Woke culture is telling the Blacks? Correct, that they are 'oppressed', that they actually DON'T HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS, that they're fucked, and so on. Again, I am not saying that it's entirely wrong and blatant lies. In some ways, it's true - Black neighborhoods are living in extreme poverty, Blacks have problems with an access to healthcare and education due to their poverty, etc.. So the problem is here.
But my point is that this WAY OF ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM IS INCORRECT. Constantly telling Blacks that they are 'oppressed', that they are victims, actually MADE THEM FEEL AS VICTIMS. It doesn't made them stronger, it doesn't empower them. In the contrary, it makes them feel more scared, more insecure, more weak, more helpless. And out of it all, the anger against their alleged 'oppressors' - the whites - is rising, and this undermines American unity, and increases the already existing racial division.
So, the Woke narrative is deeply harmful for BOTH Blacks and whites. It makes whites feel guilty, quite often for nothing, and it makes Blacks feel even more scared, helpless and angry. Also, instead of uniting Blacks and whites, it divides them. The consequences of this division we are seeing now. It wasn't like that in US before the last decade.
Now, how Woke culture is treating Blacks who refuses to feel as 'oppressed victims', and who feels proud and powerful instead? Yeah, those Blacks acknowledge the problems Black community is facing, but they also acknowledge their past victories, and the power of modern Black community. After all, even being able to mobilize for the mass protests during MLK times is already a proof of how powerful Black community is!
But if some Black persons realize and recognize that, they are ridiculed by the Woke elite. Because the only right way for Blacks to feel is to feel a VICTIM, not a powerful strong individual, according to Woke elites. Sounds kinda RACIST, isn't it? The Woke don't want powerful and strong Blacks. They want oppressed victims whose anger they can manipulate to turn them against their political opponents.
The same can be applied to feminist movement. Instead of empowering women, it focuses on victimizing them now. Metoo movement actually had demonstrated this trend most effectively, reinforcing the pattern of males as 'sexual predators' and women as victims of sexual harassment. Again, not to say this harassment doesn't happen! But again, this movement and mentality addresses the problem in a wrong way, even further victimizing women. Yeah it seems on the surface women were allowed to speak out. But they were allowed to speak out only as VICTIMS OF MALE SEXUAL HARASSMENT - the only way the modern Woke culture sees women. VICTIMS. It doesn't see them as powerful and independent agents who can run governments and don't take a shit from anyone, apparently. And this is SEXIST.
The same could be applied to gay community, and so on, and so on. The Woke culture and elite behind it doesn't want to empower the communities it swore to protect, not really. It wants to victimize them instead. It doesn't really want them to live in peace and harmony in society, It prefers to divide and antagonize instead. And now Why? Very interesting question.
74 Year old gay guy here. I actually remember when minorities were excluded from the American Dream. When Red Lining was part of inner city life. When African Americans had to be escorted to school in some states and “interracial dating / marriage”? Not on my watch. Women were not given the opportunities that they have today. And being Gay? That was not discussed in polite society. Today? All of this is a distant memory. Now we focus on grievances and how fucked we all are at the hands of the (cis, white ) Man. It is really quite sad when you think about it. When we have incredible freedom to achieve whatever we want, we are enslaved. Not by actual chains but by the mental chains of the woke movement.
C G Jung said it best: “I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to be.” The victimhood mentality is creating a horrible society of whiners where all of us now no longer live in a meritocracy.
