This is my even 4-year old piece and at times might feel clumsy (but I'm too lazy to rewrite it), so don't judge me too strictly. My main insights into Woke toxic behavior proved prescient as usual though.
There is one more very toxic point of radical Woke agenda which I wanna focus on and bring down. This is a very Woke trend to frame all their political opponents as 'bigots, haters, racist, fascist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic assholes' who are 'deeply morally wrong' at all levels, while the Wokies themselves are so 'liberal, virtuous, tolerant, etc'., holier-than-though living perfections' (in reality nope ofc, I had demonstrated the utter intolerance of radical Left on many examples and had faced their hatred and bigotry myself).
No need to tell that in many cases their opponents are not in truth 'bigots and haters' but just framed like that by the Left. But this trend is very harmful since it turns political debate into a moral one, and leaves no place for healthy argument and disagreement. Because if this is only about politics, then we both can keep our political views and still be friends. We can agree to disagree. But if this is about morality, then there is no place for disagreement anymore. Because then if I am disagreeing with you, I am not just having different political views anymore, but I am also 'morally wrong and bigot and hater'. This rhetoric is dehumanizing in its very essence.
And this is very, very wrong, and very dangerous at all levels. It dehumanizes their political opponents, allows the Woke to dismiss all their arguments as 'hatred', and makes those 'haters' a 'legitimate target' for verbal abuse as JK was subjected to. Luckily, now mostly verbal. Very soon, looking at BLM latest updates, it might turn into physical violence.
First of all, dear Lefties, there is nothing new in this rhetoric. Russian Bolshevics and other Commies, Iranian Islamists, and radicals and fanatics of all times used (pseudo) moral argument to frame their opponents. All of them claimed their morals to be superior and indeed the only true morals in the world, while all their opponents were framed as having loose morals or indeed no morals at all.
Iranian Islamists justified their terrible dictatorship by their 'superior morality', same as did Russian Commies. For the sake of their 'morality' they killed millions of people, and will gladly kill millions more. Is it there where the West is heading now? You, my dear Lefties, think that they were morally wrong but you are morally right?
Well, they believed themselves to be morally right too though, just as you do, and they believed their morals to be superior over anyone else's , just as you do, and they didn't hesitate to resort to violence for the sake of their morality, just as you did. So what's really the difference between you?
Secondly, there is no universal moral standard or any absolute morals in this world. The world isn't black and white, it is colored in shades of grey. To divide the world into good and bad guys is puerile, degrading and dehumanizing, and leaves violence as the only solution. Which we are observing in the modern West now as well.
Again, there is no absolute morality. Even murder can be justified if it is self-defence, or war kill, or would you actually condemn someone who would kill a serial child rapist? With theft it's even grayer. If you believe in capitalism and private property, then for you it is a crime. If you are an social anarchist, then for you to steal from the rich to give to the poor in a Robin Hood fashion would be a heroic deed, not a crime. So who is right and who is wrong there? This is complex. Over simplifying it does no good.
Also, if you call me 'bigot' and claim that I am morally wrong, then it is actually very arrogant of you. You claim your morals to be superior over mine. But you have no right to do so. We both have our morals, and both of us can be right or wrong. You are not the person who is always right by default, no one is. To think that you are always morally right and your moral standard is the universal moral standard, is fanaticism. I had shown which kind of people are thinking like that in previous paragraph.
For example I believe in healthy debate, freedom of speech and pluralism of opinions. This is my morals, my belief and my credo. So the Leftist Woke cancel culture, censorship and online lynching of public persons is deeply and profoundly morally wrong for me. So I believe you, Lefties, to be deeply morally wrong at all levels. Yet I am willing to listen to you and to argue with you in a healthy way. I don't wanna ban or silence or cancel you. I am even willing to let you keep your views if you won't be pushing them on me but you are unwilling to let me keep mine without calling me 'bigot' for disagreeing with you. How very tolerant of you, indeed.
Ironically enough, I don't think that me or many other critics of the Woke agenda are 'bigots' even by the Woke own moral standards. They just frame us like it. For example, if I have certain concerns with regard to mass Islamic immigration into EU because of the spread of Islamic terrorism, fundamental Islamism, female genital mutilation and religious homophobia, and potentially even 'sharia law' in Europe which is facilitated by mosques built in EU and funded by Saudis who then preach their radical Salafism here, it does not mean that I 'hate all immigrants and racist and bigot by default'. But the Lefties frame me and other people like me who have very serious safety concerns based on real facts, as such 'haters'.
They are incapable of understanding our argument and they dismiss our concerns. And then they are worried of the 'rise of the right wing populism', really? And blame 'racism' for everything as usual, really? No, dear Lefties, this is what happens when you spit on your people's concerns and when you fail to provide their safety. Then they turn to the right as their only means of protection - not because they are 'evil haters' but because there is no one else who is ready to listen to their concerns and to guarantee safety for them. And more people would turn to the right in the future if the Lefties would keep pushing their party line relentlessly and frame everyone who disagree with it as 'bigots', be sure of it. There are other views and concerns which Lefties refuse to understand and frame as 'hate', I don't have time to list all of them. What I said is enough to illustrate my point.
But yeah, no need to tell that Lefties are not that vurtuous and tolerant as they present themselves. I had written this post to show that framing their political opponents as haters, and replacing a political argument with a moral one is very dangerous thing on its own, even if the Lefties were such paragons of virtue as they claim to be.
But they are not. They do verbally abuse and even physically assault anyone who disagrees with them, including women, gay men and ethnic minorities. It goes even against their own morals, but they are still doing it. They are nothing more than big hypocrites.
And no wonder, since if they didn't have a double standard, they wouldn't have any moral standard at all. All their virtue signaling and 'fight against oppression' is nothing more than a sweet lies to grab Power, get rid of their political opponents who are already framed by them, and to establish the Left wing dictatorship like it was in USSR.
Would we allow it or not depends entirely on us. This is I would say a Moral Choice indeed we are facing now - to be cowards and stay aside, or to resist the radical Left with their cancel culture, censorship and public online lynching of their opponents, and to raise our voices for freedom, equality, human rights, safety and law, and pluralism of opinions.
OMG. I LOVE this op-ed! The ONLY disagreement I have is this. I do believe there is a moral standard & that is G-d's standard & none of us can match His standard. Other than that, Alex here is 99% right on!
Re-stacked w/ pleasure. Hope everyone reads this! Thank you, Alex!
So how long have you been writing these articles? I haven’t been on Substack long, but I’m surprised and glad I found your work. Surprised I haven’t seen you on any podcasts discussing your work.
