The government isn't our friend, protector or benefactor. Never was and never will be. More people need to open their eyes to this bitter truth.
At best, government is a servant of public interest due to social contract imposed by the voting system as in democracies. At worst, it's a tyrant and violent abuser of public interest as in dictatorships.
However, even in democracy, government is paying you social benefits, provides education and Healthcare for you, etc., not because it cares of you and your well-being so much but because it's forced to do it all by law, and by the social contract as well. That is, if government would fail to serve the public interest, its officials simply wouldn't be reelected into the office.
Moreover, government gives you all those precious benefits out of YOUR OWN POCKET anyway! Governments collect our money as taxes, and then redistribute it to provide certain social services and to give certain social benefits. Hence, government does not give you any money. It simply returns to you the money you had paid as taxes. That’s why there's nothing to be grateful for to the government, absolutely.
Hence, there is no such a thing as ‘benevolent government’. For example, it is not 'benevolent' government which gives you free education say in Nordic countries, but citizens of those countries themselves pay for it and all the other social perks out of their own pocket. Nordic governments just redistribute taxpayers' money.
Government itself owns nothing and gives nothing. It is 100% parasite on the body of our society. It is important to remember.
Also it is important to remember that governments in democracies don't really like to serve the public interest - they just have to do it by law.But in truth being in office and having no real power feels really bad to them. Hence, our ‘democratic’ governments constantly seek to break free from social contract, to get more power for themselves and to transform themselves into dictatorships as a final goal. History shows us multiple examples how this was done (let us for instance remember Nazi Germany which initially was a democracy with Nazi party being legally elected into office!)
In truth I'm absolutely convinced that the only goal of every government is unlimited power, not public interest. Every politician is Palpatine inside. So government in democracy is never happy at being just a public servant and is constantly seeking to become a tyrant over the public instead. So, if something (like corporate money, for example) would give our glorious governments the opportunity to break free from public servitude and to do what they want instead, they would eagerly jump at ANY such opportunity, be sure of it.
Hence, we as people should always be vigilant and watch over our governments, and never ever give them more power or any extra power indeed. The government would never give it back, hence we would inevitably regret empowering it. That’s why we should think twice before giving our governments any extra powers during crisis times such as COVID pandemic, Ukrainian war, climate crisis, etc. It would not solve any of those issues but just deprives us from our basic rights and freedoms.
